“I love both architecture and music; these two are like my yin and yang.”
– Denin Sy
Musician
Just a few days ago, architect-cum-musician, Denin Sy, had an intimate meet-up with a selected members of the press, at UHotel’s El Mundo Café, where he shared some interesting stuff about himself and what brought him to music. Based on his performance, his singing style and brand of music were not focused merely on showmanship. Listening to his songs was like a casual encounter, but emotionally evoking.
He chose to have his songs relatable, easy to sing along with, and nothing to showcase vocal calisthenics. Listeners get hooked on the mellow vocal tune accompanied by the calm plucking of an acoustic guitar. It’s like having coffee while listening to the falling rain, from afar.
As a newbie in the industry, Sy offers a more relaxing mood, an invite to retrospect on life and all. A music lover, he believes in the saying, “Make your passion your profession.”
A licensed architect, he graduated from Mapua University, and eventually runs his construction firm. In spite of his busy job, music for him is something that creates a balance. “Since I’m an architect, my love for music helps me put things together. It’s like a balancing act for me,” Sy said. “As a musician, when my eyes get strained because of architectural work, I relax by listening to or making music. When I want to rest my ears and delegate tasks to my musicians, I go back to my architectural work.”
With his creative process in writing songs, he shared that he draws inspiration from his family, his music heroes, and what’s happening around him. Every time he writes a song, he intends to make the listener feel like he’s in a tête-à-tête with him.
In writing a song parody, he chooses a topic and creates humorous lyrics around it. As a practicing architect, Denin explained that there are some semblances between architecture and composing.
“Lyrics and melody in songs are also like form and function in architecture. In both architecture and music, one can always revise to improve what he created,” he stressed. His love for music started when he got inspired by the music of Paco Arespacochaga, a musician and songwriter; the drummer of the Filipino pop-rock band Introvoys.
Today, Sy’s music is perhaps the male version of Moira Dela Torre. Lately, he’s fond of watching films, and it is his wish for “Minsan Kape, Minsan Ikaw” to find success in becoming an original soundtrack for films or TV series. One day, he’d love to meet and greet one of his current musical inspirations, IU. His single was released under DELTA Records.
