The Inaugural PUP Tanglaw Invitational Judo Tournament: A Celebration of Skill, Sportsmanship, and Community

The 1st PUP Tanglaw Invitational Judo Tournament proved to be a remarkable success, bringing together talented young judokas to display their skills, discipline, and sportsmanship. Held on September 21, 2024, at the PUP Gymnasium, the event marked a significant milestone for PUP’s sports program, solidifying its role as a platform for judo excellence.

The day began with a mandatory weigh-in, where all athletes ensured they met the weight requirements for their respective categories, establishing a fair foundation for the day’s competition. Coaches from various clubs played pivotal roles in guiding their athletes throughout the day. Teresita Parungao and Oliver Paguirigan from PUP Radicals Judo Club (PRJC), Lei Chan from Senshi Judo Club, Adrian Mamuric, Narciso Manabat, and Rommel Miranda from Senshi Judo Club, Sam Bernales from La Salle Judo Association (DLSU), and other dedicated coaches meticulously prepared their judokas, focusing on both technical mastery and mental readiness.

The tournament was meticulously overseen by an experienced panel of referees, led by Referee Commissioner Rudolfo Bayas. His team included Ma. Teresita De Castro and Ryan Christian Benavides, whose expertise ensured that each match adhered to the highest standards of fairness and safety.

The Philippine Judo Association (PJA), led by President Noel Estanislao, played a significant role in supporting the tournament. Estanislao, along with Coach Jocyphriam Enteria, Sam Bernales, and Dannie San Joaquin, lent their expertise and presence to this inaugural event. Their involvement underscored the importance of fostering the next generation of judokas in the country.

The event officially kicked off with the Parade of Teams, where athletes proudly displayed their school banners, symbolizing the competitive spirit and camaraderie that the sport of judo fosters. In his opening remarks, Romulo Hubbard, Director of the PUP Sports Development Program Office, delivered an inspiring message, emphasizing the values of discipline, respect, and friendship that are at the heart of judo. His words set the tone for the day, reminding athletes to compete with honor and sportsmanship.

As the competition unfolded, the morning matches brought high energy and skill, with athletes showcasing their training and techniques across a variety of weight classes. The crowd was treated to an exhilarating display of judo, with intense throws, swift counters, and resilient defenses. The referees ensured that each match was conducted with precision, and the judokas demonstrated a deep commitment to their craft.

After a morning filled with excitement, the awarding ceremony honored the top-performing athletes before resuming with the afternoon matches. Special recognition was given for the Fastest Ippon Award, which went to Harvey Mejia from Senshi Judo Club in the women’s -48 kg division, and to then-crowned tournament MVP Aaron Ana-as from YMCA Judo Club-Baguio in the men’s -55 kg division. These athletes stood out not only for their swift victories but for their exceptional technique and determination.

The tournament concluded with a medal tally that highlighted the dominance of the top teams. YMCA Judo Club-Baguio led the standings, securing 5 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal, showcasing their depth of talent and competitive edge. La Salle Judo Association (DLSU) followed closely with 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. PUP Radicals Judo Club (PRJC) and Senshi Judo Club also performed admirably, earning 2 gold medals each, with PRJC adding 7 silver medals and 4 bronze medals to their tally, while Senshi secured 3 silver medals and 5 bronze medals.

UP Los Baños (UPLB) Judo Club had a strong showing as well, capturing 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, and 3 bronze medals, while Muntinlupa Judo Club (MJC) earned 1 silver medal and 2 bronze medals. SPAR Judo Club also contributed to the competition, securing 3 bronze medals.

The success of the 1st PUP Tanglaw Invitational Judo Tournament was bolstered by the generous support of its sponsors. Tim Hortons provided gift vouchers for the participants, while Black Mamba energized the crowd with samples of Cuzco Kola Carbonated Drink and Black Mamba Energy Drink. Kalsado offered discount vouchers for gold medallists, Fastest Ippon Awardees, and the overall Tournament MVP. Additionally, HomeRoom Co-Working and Study Lounge and 00:00 Cafe provided free stay vouchers and coffee discounts, adding a unique element of hospitality for the athletes and spectators.

Sponsorship support also came from the Law Enforcers Karate Club – California Based, Law Enforcers Karate Club International, and the SROFG Karate Group, whose contributions further enhanced the success of the event.

The tournament received excellent media coverage, with lead media partner Explained PH documenting the event through photojournalist Zean Rae Amoguez. The Catalyst, PUP’s official publication, covered the tournament, while online media partners Wazzup Pilipinas and Klik PH amplified the tournament’s reach through their platforms. The tournament’s official organization partners, including Hiraya – AdU, the PUP Association of Concerned Computer Engineering Students for Service, and the PUP Peer Facilitators Association, played an integral role in ensuring the smooth running of the event.

As the tournament came to a close, participants gathered for photo opportunities, commemorating their achievements and the friendships forged during the competition. The 1st PUP Tanglaw Invitational Judo Tournament has set a high standard for future events, fostering a love for judo among athletes and the community alike. This inaugural tournament not only highlighted the immense talent of its participants but also built a foundation for future growth, inspiring a new generation of judokas to pursue excellence both on and off the mat.
